Abstract
Zirconium tetrahides, particularly zirconium tetrachloride, obtained by halogenating material containing zirconium and other metals such as iron and chromium, are purified by bringing their vapours into contact with reducing metals which do not affect the zirconium halide, e.g. zinc and/or cadmium and/or manganese, p whereby the halide impurities are brought to less volatile lower halogenation products. Vapours produced by chlorinating zirconium or zirconium carbide at 400 DEG C, or zirconium oxide and carbon at 700-800 DEG C, with a deficiency of chlorine may be passed directly into a zone containing the reducing metal which may be granulated, or in spiral or plate form, or the chloride may be sublimed in the presence of the metal powder. The vapours may alternatively be passed into melted zinc. The zirconium tetrachloride may be sublimed at 330 DEG C, or at a lower temperature in a current of inert gas, e.g. carbon dioxide. The apparatus may be of iron or, preferably, glass, porcelain or refractory brick.
