Abstract

548,145. Chlorinating titanium bearing material. CLEVELAND, F. J. (Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co.). March 7, 1941, No. 3142. [Class 1 (iii)] Titanium - bearing material comprising at least 10 per cent. of titanium is chlorinated by forming a pervious bed of said material and a reducing agent and introducing a gaseous chlorinating agent into the base of the bed, the temperature of at least a portion of the bed being maintained above about 700‹C. and the depth of the bed from the point where the chlorinating agent is introduced to the top being at least 18 inches. In the example illustrated the bed consists of titaniferous material and carbon and chlorine is introduced at 6, titanium chloride is produced in zone C, iron chloride in zone B and in the zone A the materials are heated and the reaction initiated. Volatilized chlorides leave at 9. A material more readily chloridisable than the titanium-bearing material may be added; metals, e.g. titanium or ferro titanium iron, zinc, chromium, chromium alloy such as stainless steel, or ferro chromium, or metal oxides such as iron, aluminium, zinc or chromium are mentioned. The chloridizing agent may be hydrochlorine and gas, phosgene or carbon tetrachloride, with or without chlorine. Specifications 535,179 and 548,352 are referred to.
