Abstract

Manganous chloride is produced by reacting manganese or ferromanganese and chlorine in a refractory-lined container having a base so inclined that the fused chlorine drains away from the metal or alloy as it is produced. The process may be carried out in an inclined rotary tube furnace which is rotated continuously or intermittently during the process, the lower part of the charge being initially heated to redness by a gas burner. Chlorine is admitted at the upper end. Temperature limits of 600 DEG C. and 1,000 DEG C. are specified. A substantial amount of the iron present in the ferromanganese is removed as volatile ferric chloride; ferrous chloride in the manganous chloride may be removed by a subsidiary stream of chlorine introduced near to the outlet and/or in a separate apparatus. Carbon on the residual metal may be removed by water and the unreacted metal returned for further chlorination. The Provisional Specification includes the production of fusible metal halides generally.
