Abstract

<PICT:0386790/III/1> Ferric chloride is obtained by chlorination of iron ore, scrap iron or other ferruginous substance at such a temperature and pressure, say 350-450 DEG C. and 10-20 atmospheres, that the chloride is obtained in a liquid condition capable of forming drops. In the apparatus shown iron ore is introduced together with a little burnt lime to prevent loss of chlorine through an air-lock b and descends between staggered plates c of chlorine-resistant material meeting chlorine entering at i. The molten ferric chloride formed runs down an inclined surface d and through a sieve e into a lower chamber where it is electrolysed for the production of iron. The gangue is removed through an air-lock f. Part of the gas is removed at k compressed and evaporated for removal of oxygen and carbon dioxide and returned at l. The vessel a may be lined with enamel and lagged externally.
