Abstract

18,763. Savelsberg, P. J., Wannschaff, G., and Allgemeine Elektro-Metallurgische Ges. Aug. 31. Chlorides; nickel chlorides.-Chlorides of the heavy metals, such as nickel, are obtained from sulphide ores, mattes, &c. as follows :-The powdered material and ferric oxide are suspended in a solution of calcium chloride, into which gaseous chlorine is introduced. If nickel matte is being treated, chlorides of nickel and iron are formed and the solution is used on fresh supplies of matte, air being blown in to cause the precipitition of iron hydrate and the formation of more nickel chloride. Lime, or calcium carbonate or chloride, may be added to take up the sulphuric acid which is formed. The process may be carried on in the cold, or at 60‹ or 70‹ C.
