Abstract

Gases obtained by chlorinating metal ores, especially titanium ores are treated to prevent dissociation of ferric chloride present into ferrous chloride during the stage of cooling the hot gases at say 800 DEG C. to a temperature above the point of precipitation of ferric chloride, e.g. 300 DEG C. The treatment may consist in adding chlorine to the hot gases to provide a concentration thereof of 1 per cent by volume, or by rapidly cooling the gas by adding a cold gas, e.g. the spent gas from which the chlorides have been removed, or an inert liquid, e.g. titanium tetrachloride, or liquefied spent gas; the two treatments may be effected simultaneously, and for this purpose a cold gas containing chlorine, or a liquid, e.g. titanium tetrachloride, containing dissolved chlorine may be employed.
