Abstract
Aluminium and calcium are removed from molten baths of silicon by adding to the bath gaseous chlorine to form and volatilize the chlorides of aluminium and calcium and to reduce the content of these metals to less than 0.05 per cent by weight in the case af aluminium and less than 0.01 per cent by weight in the case of calcium. The gas may be introduced through a refractory tube or by bottom blowing, the temperature of the metal being preferably 1500-1700 DEG C.ALSO:Al and Ca, present as impurities in ferro-silicon alloys are removed by adding gaseous chlorine to the molten ferro-silicon to form and volatilize the chlorides of Al and Ca and to reduce the contents of these impurities to less than 0,05 per cent by weight of Al and less than 0,01 per cent by weight of Ca. In an example of treatment of a ferro-silicon containing 65 per cent by weight of Si, from 28 to 45,8 lbs. of chlorine were employed per ton of metal treated. The gas may be introduced through a refractory tube or by bottom blowing, the temperature of the metal being preferably 1500 DEG -1700 DEG C.
