Abstract
A process for degassing molten steel comprises bubbling carbon monoxide and/or carbon dioxide having a moisture content of not more than 1% through the molten metal, the gas being introduced as such from an external source. The gas may be passed through a metal or metal and ceramic lance which may end in a porous plug, or may be passed through a porous plug in the bottom of the vessel holding the metal, or may be blown across the surface of the metal help in a furnace or ladle. The process is preferably carried out immediately prior to casting.
