Abstract
Molten magnesium containing as impurity at least one of the metals iron, aluminium and manganese is refined by maintaining under and in contact with the body of molten magnesium a quantity of salt flux having a greater density than molten magnesium and passing titanium tetrachloride vapour into the magnesium through the flux whereby metallic titanium is precipitated in the magnesium, sequesters the impurities and settles to the bottom. Purified magnesium is then separated from the precipitated impurities and underlying flux. The flux used may contain magnesium chloride either added as such or produced by the refining reaction. The amount of titanium tetrachloride used is preferably not more than 3 per cent by weight of the magnesium treated.
