Abstract
A process of refining impure aluminium and magnesium comprises forming a body of molten metal containing the magnesium and aluminium to be purified, the magnesium content of the melt being at least twice that of the aluminium content, providing a suitable flux to cover the metal, puddling the flux and metal to cause intimate contact between the flux and interior portions of the body of molten metal, causing thickening of the flux whereby heavy metallic elements, namely manganese, chromium, zirconium, titanium and iron, are precipitated out and form a sludge with portions of the flux, which settles out, then separating the molten metal from the flux and distilling magnesium from the aluminium. Zinc may be incorporated in the initial body of molten metal to the extent of 5-60 per cent of the aluminium present, and is eliminated with magnesium during the final distillation. A precipitant may be added to the flux-covered bath to aid in thickening the flux and in precipitation of the heavy metal to be removed. Such precipitant may be one of the said heavy metals or a halide or complex halide of such heavy metal. U.S.A. Specification 1,918,339 is referred to.
