Abstract
<PICT:0939805/III/1> <PICT:0939805/III/2> <PICT:0939805/III/3> Sulphur dioxide is manufactured by the combustion of elementary sulphur with air, air and molten sulphur being injected a velocity into one end of an elongated primary combustion chamber, secondary air being blown through inlets spaced along the whole length of the primary chamber, and the reaction being completed in a main combustion chamber of greater cross-section. Atomized molten sulphur and primary air are injected at 4 into the preliminary chamber 1, and secondary air is blown tangentially or radially into the chamber 1 through inlets 2 inclined towards the nozzle end of the chamber. The coaxial main chamber 5 has a chicane baffle 7. The main chamber may surround the preliminary chamber, baffles containing the burning sulphur to follow a tortuous path, Fig. 2 not shown. In a further modification, Figs. 4 and 5, the chamber 1 is separated from the main chamber 5 by an arcuate wall 17 extending across the furnace and partly supported by the baffle walls 18, 19 in the main chamber 5. Tertiary air may be blown into the main combustion chamber.
