Abstract
Sulphur dioxide is produced by burning S whereby molten is delivered to the bottom of a chamber in which a combustion zone is formed and is thrown upwards as a spray of droplets into the combustion zone by a carrier gas released upwards through the bottom of the chamber, combustion air being introduced into the combustion zone with a downward component of velocity at a point above the point of release of the carrier gas. The carrier gas may be air, SO2 or N2. Inside the burner 1, <PICT:1030917/C1/1> formed from refractory material, are a primary combustion chamber 4 and secondary combustion chamber 5 linked by converging ducts 6. Molten S is supplied through the U-tube 7 to the bottom of 4. Combustion air, preferably preheated, is fed to 4 through 12 and downwardly inclined passages 12a and to 5 through 13 and upwardly inclined passages 13a. The carrier gas is supplied through pipe 14, which terminates below the bottom of 4, inside sulphur supply tube 7.
