Class 51 (1) In a cyclone furnace arranged to discharge gases laterally and provided with an outlet for molten slag and air inlet means for discharging secondary air tangentially or substantially tangentially to the periphery of the furnace chamber, secondary air inlet nozzles 11-15 open into the upper quadrant of the furnace chamber 10 on that side of a vertical plane passing through the longitudinal axis of the furnace chamber at which the whirling gases move downwardly. The discharge ends of the secondary air nozzles are axially displaced relative to one another and are so disposed in stepped formation that each successive nozzle end is displaced in relation to the preceding end in the direction of whirl of the furnace gases. The furnace wall includes cooling tubes 1 covered by refractory material 2, an outer insulating layer 3 and a sheet metal casing 4, the front wall 7 being formed with an inwardly extending frustro-conical throat 8 forming a gas outlet 9, said front wall and throat being formed by cooling tubes covered by refractory material. When burning lean fuel, hot waste gases may be added to the primary air to raise the temperature thereof and to maintain a suitable inlet velocity. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown, the secondary air ducts enclose nozzles supplying primary air and fuel and their centres lie on a plane normal to the longitudinal axis of the furnace chamber.
