Abstract

518,261. Refining iron and alloy steels. WESTBERG, S. May 16, 1938, Nos. 14533 and 14534. Convention dates, May 18, and July 27, 1937. [Classes 72 and 82(i)] Impure irons or alloy steels containing one or more of the elements silicon, nickel, chromium and aluminium, are refined by subjecting them in finely divided or granulated form to heat treatment in the solid state in the presence of a decarburizing gas mixture and then melting them under conditions which will maintain the already attained purity, e.g., in the presence of inert gases or under reduced pressure. When the decarburizing gas mixture contains hydrogen an element such as aluminium, silicon, calcium or magnesium, which will react with the gaseous products of the heat treatment and regenerate the hydrogen may be present. The iron &c. may be coated with an oxide such as lime or a ceramic material such as spinel or sillimanite by suspending such material in the quenching medium used to produce the granulated material. To remove any phosphorus present, the melting may be carried out in an electric induction furnace in the presence of a basic material such as lime or a basic oxidising slag.
