Cast-iron processes.-Chilled rolls composed of a mixture of iron and controlled proportions of silicon, sulphur, phosphorus, manganese, and carbon, are cast from metal heated in an open hearth furnace, such as that of the regenerative Siemens type, where the control of the fuel and consequently of the heat, time of melt, oxidation, &c. is such as to allow of reliable determination of the proportions of the substances in the cast roll, and of the resulting properties.
