Abstract

22,692. Keller, C. A. Oct. 8. Cast-iron and scrap processes; oxide, cast-iron, and scrap processes.-Cast iron is made by melting scrap iron or steel in an electric furnace and carburizing the metal.. The electrode, in. the melting-furnace is driven into the charge, which, if it is not desired to remove phosphorus, consists of scrap iron, a desulphurizing-slag, and coal. If it is desired to remove phosphorus, an oxidizing calcium slag is used in the melting- furnace, and the carbon is not mixed with the charge but is added to the metal in the melting- furnace, for example through a hollow electrode, or to the metal in a second electric furnace, in which it is treated with a desulphurizing-slag. Oxides, for example of silicon and manganese, or ferro-alloys may be added to the charge in the melting-furnace, or to the second furnace, to increase the percentage of silicon, manganese, &c. in the product. If it is desired to obtain a highly carburized cast iron containing a minimum of silica, only a small quantity of a slag containing a minimum of silica is used in the melting-furnace.
