Cast-iron processes; ore and cast-iron processes.-In the refining of iron and steel, the metal is treated by blowing or with ore so as to drive the phosphorus into the slag; the metal is then removed, either in part or wholly, and the slag treated with carbon so as to drive the phosphorus into the metal remaining in the furnace, or into a charge of cheap iron introduced for this purpose, whereupon this phosphoric iron is separated from the slag, which may then be used in the finishing of the dephosphorized iron. The phosphoric iron produced may be used in the basic Bessemer process. If desired, two furnaces may be used in the process.
