Abstract

27,201. Allison, C. A., [International Metal Products Co.]. Nov. 23. Ore, cast-iron, and scrap processes. - Ingots containing not less than 99À8 per cent of iron are obtained by prolonging the refining process in a basic open-hearth furnace until the aggregate content of sulphur, phosphorus, manganese, carbon, and silicon does not exceed 0À14 per cent, and then deoxidizing and de - gasifying the charge before, during, or after, running into moulds. Solid or molten pig iron, steel scrap, &c. is charged into the furnace, and limestone and iron ore added. The charge, at a temperature of at least 2850‹ F., is tapped into a ladle, wherein it may be treated with aluminium, or aluminium pig-iron, and finally run into moulds.
