Abstract

21,376. Pszczolka, L., and Daelen, R. M. Oct. 11. B a s i c processes ; Bessemer or pneumatic processes; open-hearth processes.-A preliminary refining of pig iron, before treatment in an open hearth or basic-lined converter, is effected by running the molten iron from a blast furnace A into a converter B, whence the refined metal is run into the open hearth C or converter D, according as the percentage of phosphorus is low or high. When the metal is in the converter B, it is subjected to the action of hot compressed air, which is blown into and over the metal. Iron oxide, or other suitable oxide, may be introduced with the blast, and, at the conclusion of the preliminary refining, the slag may be run off and manganese or iron containing manganese may be added to the charge. The converter B may be fixed or movable, and one or two intermediate or mixing vessels may be used for transferring the metal from furnace to furnace.
