Cast-iron processes.-A partly refined charge containing silicon is run from the open-hearth furnace or converter into an electric furnace, wherein the temperature is allowed to fall to 700-900‹ C., in order to reduce the oxides contained in the charge, and to form polysilicates of iron and manganese to oxidize the carbon and phosphorus, and to allow occluded gas to escape. The temperature is then raised, the polysilicates passing into the slag, and the charge finished.
