Abstract

27,003. Soc. Anon. ElectromÚtallurgigue (ProcÚdÚs Paul Girod). Nov. 20. [Addition to 26,588/09.] Cast-iron processes.-The refining of steel by cooling a partly-refined charge in an electric furnace, as described in the parent Specification, is effected by cooling to near the point of fusion, say 1250-1300‹ C., and the operation may be carried out in any non-oxidizing furnace. The temperature of the charge may be lowered and raised more than once before the final refining, between which stages, or before first cooling, iron oxide, or one or more reducing-agents such as carbon and silicon, may be added. If the phosphorus content be large, the initial temperature is maintained until complete oxidation is effected, the necessary carbon, manganese, and silicon being added before cooling.
