Cast-iron and scrap processes.-Steel made in the Bessemer converter or open-hearth furnace is purified by pouring it into a vessel containing a molten silico-calcium-carbide slag which has been prepared by melting in an electric furnace a mixture of sand and lime and adding carbon.
