Abstract

27,489. Massenez, O. Dec. 12. Basic, Bessemer, and open-hearth processes; blastfurnace charges. - In the manufacture of steel from pig-iron containing more than 1 per cent each of silicon and phosphorus, the metal is first blown in a basic-lined converter with additions of lime and oxides of manganese or iron, as described in Specification No. 19,053, A.D. 1904, to form a siliceous slag. This slag is poured off at the first appearance of the carbon flame, and the blow is continued with sufficient addition of lime to reduce the phosphorus contents to 0À5 per cent or less. The highly phosphoric slag so obtained is poured off, and the dephosphorization of the metal is completed, after recarburization in a basic open-hearth. The recarburization may be effected by adding coke or anthracite to the charge during the pouring from the converter, or by adding pig to the openhearth before the charge from the converter is introduced ; or it may be effected in an intermediate receptacle large enough to receive the charges from several converters. The slag obtained during the open-hearth treatment may be utilized as a blastfurnace charge, to recover the iron and phosphorus contained therein.
