Basic processes ; open-hearth processes.-In the manufacture of ingot iron and steel, pig iron or partly-refined metal from a blast furnace, mixer, &c., is poured into a bath of purified or semipurified metal, which is in oxidized condition and may be covered with oxidizing-slag. The bath is brought into an oxidized condition between each addition so as to remove phosphorus, carbon, &c. from the added metal, being itself simultaneously deoxidized. The total bath is brought to the proper tapping condition, and part or the whole is tapped. Reference is made to Specifications No. 8481, A.D. 1900, and No. 3810, A.D. 1898.
