Abstract

111,916. Armstrong, Whitworth, & Co., Sir W. G., and Rowden, W. C. Dec. 20, 1916 Cast-iron and scrap processes.-In the manufacture of steel, in which a moderate percentage of sulphur and phosphorus is permissible, steel scrap with carbonaceous matter, containing as low a percentage of sulphur as possible, is melted in an open-hearth acid furnace. When the steel is required to be as low as possible in sulphur and phosphorus, as in the case of steel for ordnance, the steel scrap is melted in an openhearth basic furnace, with carbonaceous material and, preferably, also fluorspar, limestone, or other basic material. The steel may be poured into ingot moulds and remelted with pig iron, or an addition of carbonaceous material, in an openhearth acid furnace, or the steel may be run into an open-hearth acid or basic furnace, pig iron, scrap steel, or carbonaceous material being added as required. Specifications 1178/79 and 2187/04 are referred to.
