Abstract

121,674. Humbert, E. Feb. 26, 1918 Cast-iron and scrap processes.-Iron or steel of any desired content of carbon, phosphorus, &c., is made in an electric furnace from pig or cast iron, or steel scrap, or both, by introducing the charge in a solid condition, applying the electric current and bringing a current of air or equivalent oxidizing fluid into contact with the heated solid material, continuing the heating and the air &c. supply until all the charge is melted, and refining the molten material to the desired product. In some cases, for oxidizing small quantities of carbon, the air mav be applied to the molten material. Lime and in some cases carbonaceous material or ore or other oxide, may be added to the charge. A furnace may be used which is specially fitted with air inlet ports and outlets for the products of combustion, or, in the furnace shown, which may be of the Heroult type, air may be supplied from an ordinary blower through a pipe F, which is gradually raised as the charge of scrap G and cast-iron borings H melts and is withdrawn when the entire charge is molten. The furnace is then closed and the refining completed.
