Abstract

1,210,312. Preparing acrolein. DEUTSCHE ERDOL A.G. 17 Jan., 1968 [6 April, 19671, No. 2548/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division B1] Acrolein is prepared by subjecting propylene to partial oxidation in the gas phase with a mixture of oxygen and inert gas in the presence of a catalyst containing bismuth oxide and molybdenum oxide and one or more activating additives, at 1-10 kp/sq. cm. pressure and 350-500‹ C., using an oxygen:propylene ratio of 0À5: 1À0 to 2: 1, an inert gas: propylene ratio of 5: 1 to 15: 1, a residence time of 0À05-0À3 second at a load between 2 and 10 gms. propylene/gm. catalyst/hour, and the inert gas comprising 0-100% water vapour during not more than the initial 200 hours of operation, after which time the inert gas is free from water vapour. The preferred activating additive is iron oxide, the catalyst also containing silica and phosphate and having a particle size of 0À8-1À2 mm. (see Division B1). The inert gas may be nitrogen, using air as the oxidant; water vapour is preferably used only for the initial 50 hours of operation of the reactor.
