Abstract

1,202,687. Preparation of phenol and acetone. SOC. ITALIANA RESINE S.p.A. 12 March, 1969 [28 March. 1968], No. 13102/69. Heading C2C. Phenol and acetone are prepared the acid decomposition of cumene hydroperoxide by reacting cumene hydroperoxide of at least 70% by weight purity, the remainder being essentially cumene, in a decomposition reactor at 30-70‹ C. with acetone and aqueous 10-75% by weight H 2 SO 4 , the acid being used in such an amount that the reaction product discharged contains 0.05-1.0% by weight of H 2 SO 4 and the acetone used in such amount that 37-48% by weight is present in the product discharged. The reaction is preferably performed in a continuous manner at 45-55‹ C. using cumene hydroperoxide which has been prepared by the oxidation of cumene with oxygen or a gas containing molecular oxygen.
