Abstract

Diene hydrocarbons are prepared by reacting dioxan-1,3 with steam containing 0.002-0.06 wt. per cent of phosphoric acid in the presence of a normal metal phosphate, e.g. tricalcium and/or tricadmium phosphate. The catalyst may contain 3-10% of a corresponding hydrogen phosphate. The process may be carried out in a multi-stage reactor in which the phosphoric acid is fed at different rates into the different stages together with steam at 700-800 DEG C., said steam being fed to the first stage at a constant rate of about 1 kg./litre of catalyst/hour and into the other stages at such a rate that the total quantity of steam fed into all the stages is about 1.2 kg./litre of total catalyst/hour. The phosphoric acid need not be added to the catalyst during catalysis but may be added during regeneration of the catalyst. The examples describe the preparation of isoprene, 1,3-butadiene and methyl pentadiene from 4,4-dimethyl, 4-dimethyl and 2,4,4,6-tetramethyl-dioxan-1,3 respectively.
