Abstract

1387257 Separation of hydrogen sulphide RUHRKOHLE AG 2 March 1972 [12 March 1971 10 Sept 1971 (2) 8 Feb 1972] 05043/74 Divided out of 1379624 Heading ClA The removal of hydrogen sulphide from an aqueous liquid comprising coke oven gas condensate on the scrubbing liquid obtained during the ammonia scrubbing of gas is carried out by the addition to the aqueous liquid of a watersoluble quinone or hydroquinone and effecting an oxidation operation by adding air to the resultant mixture in an oxidation vessel at a pH value of more than 8 to form ammonium sulphide or thiosulphate. It is preferred to add about 10-30 mg./l. of quinone or hydroquinone together with about 2 g./l. of an As, Sb or Sr compound to catalyse the oxidation reaction. Hydrogen cyanide and organic sulphur compounds can also be removed along with the hydrogen sulphide, when present in the aqueous liquid. The oxidation reaction is effected using air and the rate at which air is introduced is controlled according to the Redox potentials at the inlet and outlet of the oxidation vessel.
