Abstract

1379624 Gas purification; sulphur RUHRKOHLE AG 2 March 1972 [12 March 1971 10 Sept 1971 (2) 8 Feb 1972] 9907/72 Heading C1A Hydrogen sulphide and ammonia are removed from gas streams and/or water by being caused to react together in the presence of a solvent containing an arsenic, antimony or tin compound as catalyst to form ammonium polythionate. The gas stream may be coke oven gas. The ammonium polythionate produced may be oxidized by air to sulphur using hydroquinone or naphthoquinone as catalysts. Preferably the air for oxidation flows upwardly through a descending stream of gas cooler condensate and is charged with hydrogen sulphide and ammonia prior to entry into the oxidizer. The gas cooler condensate so treated may be used in an ammonia scrubbing plant to which desulphurized crude gas is supplied. Ammonia may be expelled from the solvent and scrubbing liquid by addition of lime. Any hydrogen cyanide present in the gas is converted into ammonium thiocyanate.
