Abstract

The components of a gas mixture which have been separated by gas chromatography are detected and analysed quantitatively by passing the component gases over an oxidizing agent and then leading them to an infra-red gas analyser. The separation may be effected by passing nitrogen through a tube containing a mixture of kieselguhr and dinonyl phthalate into which the gas mixture has been injected. When inorganic gases have been separated, the oxidizing agent, e.g. copper oxide at dull red heat, converts carbon to carbon dioxide, hydrogen to water vapour, and sulphur to sulphur dioxide; these products are estimated by means of the infra-red analyser and the amount of the gaseous component in the mixture is calculated.
