Abstract
In the manufacture of sulphuric acid by catalytic oxidation of moist gases containing sulphur dioxide and subsequent condensation, the converter is cooled by indirect heat exchange and the cooling surfaces of the converter are kept at temperatures above the point of condensation of the reacting gases by preheating the cooling medium by means of heat produced in the sulphur dioxide-forming reaction. Air used as the cooling medium may be preheated by passage through a heat exchanger in co-current flow with the gas containing sulphur dioxide, or by means of steam from a waste heat boiler supplied with heat from the sulphur dioxide-forming reaction. Alternatively, or in addition, the steam from this waste heat boiler may itself be used as the cooling medium. To conserve heat, the used cooling medium may be employed, e.g. as combustion air, in the sulphur-dioxide forming process, or may preheat the feed water to the waste heat boiler. The hot sulphur dioxide-containing gases may be formed by combustion of hydrogen sulphide or by other methods.
