Abstract

226,518. General Chemical Co., (Assignees of Clark, C. B.). Dec. 21, 1923, [Convention date]. Sulphur trioxide, catalytic production of.-The contact process for the manufacture of sulphur trioxide is conducted in two or more stages with intermediate absorption of the product and utilization of the heat of the reaction gases prior to the first conversion for effecting a later conversion. The gases from a sulphur burner 1 and combustion chamber 2 interact in a converter or series of converters 4; the reaction gases are cooled and the sulphur trioxide formed is removed by the absorber 6 and filter 7; the residual gases, which still contain up to 30 per cent of the initial amount of sulphur dioxide, are forced by the blower 8 through another converter 9, after their temperature has been raised by passage through the heat-interchangers 5, 3; the product is removed by the absorber 10. Additional air may be introduced at the points x. If the converter 4 is built in more than one part, as is preferably the case when the gas mixture contains 12 per cent or more of sulphur dioxide, heat-interchangers may be located between the parts; the waste heat from the converter 9 may also be utilized in a preceding stage of the process. The blower 8 may be placed in front of the burner 1.
