Abstract

Crude phosphoric acid is treated with oxidizing agents such as nitric, chloric, or bromic acid or salts thereof to remove organic impurities and convert inorganic impurities to a higher state of oxidation. A small quantity of hydrogen peroxide, sulphur dioxide, sulphuretted hydrogen, hydrogen, or acetic, formic, tartaric, or citric acid is added simultaneously or subsequently and the phosphoric acid then reacted with calcium phosphate or other calcium compound to obtain monocalcium phosphate, the solid product obtained by drying being free from discolouration. Impurities in the calcium phosphate &c. used for the reaction are oxidized by having excess of oxidizing agent present in the phosphoric acid.
