Abstract
a - Sulphoxy - isobutyric acid and/or bis - (1 - methyl - 1 - carboxyethyl) sulphate are prepared by oxidizing mono-t-butyl sulphate or di-t-butyl sulphate or a mixture thereof with one or more oxidizing agents selected from nitric acid, nitrogen peroxide, nitrogen peroxide and oxygen, and dinitrogen trioxide, at a temperature from 0 DEG to 60 DEG C. The reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of an additional source of sulphate ions. a - Hydroxyisobutyric acid is formed as a by-product in the above process. Mono - t - butyl sulphate and/or di - t - butyl sulphate are prepared by reacting isobutylene or a gas mixture containing the same with 60-80% sulphuric acid.
