Abstract
Pure silicon tetrafluoride is prepared by reacting fluosilicic acid with at least a stoichiometric equivalent of silica in the presence of sulphuric acid, in which the concentration of the sulphuric acid exceeds 70 per cent by weight H2SO4 throughout the reaction. The silica may be added as silica gel 8-30 mesh. The reaction may be effected continuously by adding the fluosilicic acid continuously to a vessel continuously supplied with sulphuric acid, 93-98 per cent, and at least sufficient silica to react with all the fluosilicic acid. The process is particularly suitable for treating the unfiltered crude fluosilicic acid containing silica obtained by water scrubbing the off-gas from the acidulation of rock phosphate to superphosphate. The acid from the silicon tetrafluoride preparation may be used in rock phosphate acidulation. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 745,800.
