Abstract
The invention comprises the new compound mono-ferro-dicalcium citrate of formula Ca2Fe(C6H5O7)2. It may be prepared by reacting citric acid in aqueous solution with ferrum reductum or a ferrous compound and a calcium salt in stoichiometrical proportions or with an excess of the calcium salt, the water being expelled after the reaction is completed until the completely anhydrous citrate remains. Preferably a protective gas, for example hydrogen, nitrogen or carbon dioxide, is passed through the reaction mixture until all the water had been removed. In the examples (a) citric acid is reacted with ferrum reductum to form an acid ferro citrate which is reacted with calcium carbonate to give mono-ferrodicalcium citrate; (b) citric acid is reacted with ferrous hydroxide to give an acid ferro citrate which is reacted with calcium carbonate to give mono-ferro-dicalcium citrate.
