Abstract

Precipitated calcium carbonate monohydrate, claimed as a new compound, is obtained (i) by reacting an aqueous solution containing calcium ions with an aqueous solution containing carbonate ions with stirring in a cold saturated sodium chloride solution containing magnesium ions or glassy sodium polyphosphate of Na2O/P2O5 mol. ratio 1.12/1, or (ii) by adding a solution of sodium carbonate to an aqueous solution containing calcium ions and magnesium ions at room temperature, stirring and allowing to stand for a day; either or both solutions may contain sodium chloride. A suitable concentration of magnesium ions is between 0.05 and 0.5 per cent expressed as magnesium chloride: 300-800 parts polyphosphate per million of the reaction mixture may be used. A molar excess of one reagent, e.g. 3-8 mols. sodium carbonate per mol. calcium chloride, is prepared. The product may be dehydrated to give an hydrous calcium carbonate suitable as a filler for rubber, paint and paper.
