Abstract

Excess of a calcium or aluminium hydroxide, hydrated oxide, carbonate, or silicate is reacted with a carboxylic or sulphonic acid of at least 12 and preferably 18 carbon atoms to give a basic salt used as a filler for plastic substances, e.g. rubber (see Group V). In examples: (1) a suspension of a hydrated basic aluminium oxychloride (prepared from aluminium chloride solution and ethylene oxide) is reacted with potassium oleate solution; (2) a suspension of a hydrated basic aluminium sulphate (obtained from aluminium sulphate and ethylene oxide) is reacted with oleoyl - N - methyltaurine sodium salt; (3) a suspension of an aluminium hydrosilicate of the formula Al6(OH)15(H2O)4SiO2 was reacted with sodium stearate solution; (4) a suspension of calcium silicate is reacted with sodium stearate solution.ALSO:A hydrated basic aluminium oxychloride containing two atoms of chlorine to every six molecules of aluminium hydroxide is obtained by stirring ethylene oxide with 10 per cent aluminium chloride solution. A hydrated basic aluminium sulphate containing one sulphate radical to every six molecules of aluminium hydroxide is obtained by stirring ethylene oxide with 10 per cent aluminium sulphate solution. An aluminium hydrosilicate of the formula Al6(OH)18 (H2O)4 SiO2 is prepared by adding concentrated ammonia solution to 10 per cent commercial aluminium sulphate solution containing combined silicate ions.ALSO:Rubber is compounded and vulcanized with a basic calcium or aluminium salt of a high molecular weight carboxylic or sulphonic acid containing at least 12 and preferably 18 carbon atoms (see Group IV (b)). In examples (1), smoked rubber sheet is compounded with a basic aluminium oleate and also with zinc oxide, a hydrocarbon softener, sulphur and mercaptobenzthiazole; (2) light crepe rubber is compounded with (a) a basic aluminium salt of oleoyl-N-methyltaurine, or (b) a basic calcium or aluminium stearate, in each case together with zinc oxide, paraffin oil, sulphur, mercaptobenzthiazole and diphenylguanidine.
