Abstract

Diferromonocalcium citrate, CaFe2(C6H5O7)2, is produced by reacting citric acid in aqueous solution with a ferrous compound and a calcium salt, in stoichiometrical proportions or with an excess of ferrous compound, water being expelled after the reaction has been completed until the completely anhydrous citrate remains. Preferably a protective gas, e.g. hydrogen, nitrogen or carbon dioxide is passed through the reaction mixture. In the example a solution of citric acid is mixed with ferrous hydroxide in an atmosphere of nitrogen, and calcium carbonate is added; water is expelled from the calcium ferro-citrate formed by heating and anhydrous diferromonocalcium citrate is obtained.
