Abstract

Para - aminosalicyclic acid ( 2 - hydroxy - 4-aminobenzoic acid) is obtained by heating m-aminophenol with an alkali bicarbonate or ammonium carbonate in aqueous solution in a closed vessel with an atmosphere of nitrogen. Reducing agents, such as sodium hydrosulphite, also activated carbon, may be present. In an example m-aminophenol reacts with sodium bicarbonate in presence of sodium hydrosulphite in a nitrogen atmosphere. Preferred temperatures and pressures are above 100 DEG C. and 350-400 lbs.
