Abstract

Acetaldehyde is produced by causing acetylene and water vapour to react in a reaction chamber at elevated temperature in the presence of a phosphate catalyst, phosphoric acid, or a phosphoric compound capable of emitting phosphoric acid under the conditions of the reaction, being continuously or intermittently supplied to the reaction chamber. The phosphoric acid or compound capable of emitting phosphoric acid may be injected into the gases before they enter the reaction chamber or may be sprayed directly on to the catalyst in the reaction chamber. The gases carrying the phosphoric acid or phosphoric acid-producing compound may be conveyed to the reaction chamber through another chamber having such a temperature as to cause the precipitation of excess phosphoric acid. Esters of phosphoric acid may be used as compounds capable of emitting phosphoric acid. In the example a mixture of acetylene and water vapour in the ratio of 1 to 4 and having a temperature slightly below 300 DEG C. is introduced into a container coated inside with graphite and active carbon. The carbon is impregnated with phosphoric acid and concentrated phosphoric acid is added continuously or intermittently. The gases are passed through the container into a reaction tower filled with a catalyst consisting of active carbon impregnated with zinc phosphate. The temperature in the reaction tower is suitably about 250 DEG C.
