Abstract
Magnesia and nitrogenous fertilizers are obtained from dolomite by dissolving the dolomite in nitric acid, precipitating magnesium hydroxide from the solution with ammonia, separating the precipitate by filtration and converting it into magnesia and converting the filtrate into a fertilizer. The ammoniacal filtrate may be evaporated to obtain a fertilizer containing ammonium and calcium nitrates or may be treated with carbonic acid, say that obtained in the initial dissolution of the dolomite, to obtain calcium carbonate and ammonium nitrate which may be either separated or evaporated together to form a fertilizer. The amount of ammonia added may be restricted so that the fertilizer obtained contains magnesium nitrate. The ammonia may be added in the gaseous or aqueous form preferably with cooling to a temperature below 20 DEG C. The magnesia may be obtained free from iron by adding sufficient ammonia to precipitate ferric hydroxide which is filtered off before the further addition of ammonia. The ammoniacal filtrate may be evaporated at 140 DEG C., and solidified during cooling and stirring to form crystallinc granules. Specification 403,054 is referred to.ALSO:Nitrogenous fertilizers are obtained from dolomite by dissolving the dolomite in nitric acid, precipitating magnesium hydroxide from the solution with ammonia, separating the precipitate by filtration and converting it into magnesia and converting the filtrate into a fertilizer.
