Abstract
Quartzite is converted to cristobalite or tridymite by heating in comminuted form in admixture with a granular promoting agent including an alkali or alkaline earth halide or silicofluoride. The conversion may be effected in 5 hours at 1200 DEG C., or may be expedited by passing the materials through an electric arc, oxy-acetylene flame or an electrically heated carbon tube. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the conversion of alumino-silicates such as andalusite sillimanite and cyanite to mullite. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:In making shaped articles of silica, the quartzite is first converted to cristobalite or tridymite by heating it in comminuted form in admixture with a granular promoting agent including an alkali or alkaline earth halide or silico-fluoride. The conversion may be effected in 5 hours at 1200 DEG C., or may be expedited by passing the materials through an electric arc, oxy-acetylene flame, or an electrically heated carbon tube. The product may be bonded with lime or an ester of silicic acid or the corresponding esters of titanium or zirconium, shaped and burned. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to bonding with silicic acid ester before the allotropic conversion. It also refers to the conversion of the aluminosilicates andalusite, sillimanite and cyanite to mullite. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
