Abstract
The process described in the parent Specification for conversion of a silica mass into tridymite by the use of a flux comprising silica, calcium oxide, an alkali oxide and a heavy metal oxide, is modified in that by adjusting the temperature of burning and/or the flux content, any desired degree of conversion is attained, from the production of ordinary silica stone material up to tridymite stone material. The firing may be carried out at higher temperatures when very little flux is present. To avoid migration of the flux to the surface of the moulded article during preliminary drying, the flux constituents may be added in an insoluble form, e.g. as a frit of soda, ferrous oxide and silicic acid with, is desired, lime.
