Abstract

A refractory block, brick or other body for use in the construction of glass-melting or other furnaces is formed during manufacture with a resistant coating by applying to the surface a coating consisting of a mixture of the constituents of the glass or other material to be melted and of the material from which the body is made, which coating becomes vitrified when the body is fired. In a modification the body is made wholly of the usual refractory constituents admixed with the glass or other material to be melted, and when the body is fired a protective coating is formed.
