536,279. Casting refractory blocks. CORNING GLASS WORKS. Dec. 28, 1939, No. 32979. Convention date, Jan. 3. [Class 87 (ii)] A process of filling cavities in cast refractory blocks comprises pouring the block, permitting the casing to cool until a cavity is formed therein, packing the cavity with grains of a material having a sintering temperature lower than that attained by the grains during the subsequent cooling of the casting, and sintering the grains by the heat of the casting. A specified material, suitable both for the block itself and for the packing grains, is an alumina-silica compound, consisting essentially of mullite and/or corundum crystals united by high melting point glass, as described in Specification 265,847, [Class 22]. Fig. 3 shows the cavity E, extending into the body of the cast block. In Fig. 4, the front has been broken off, and grains F are being poured into the cavity.
