Abstract
1392227 Casting refractory material CARBORUNDUM CO 16 June 1972 [29 June 1971] 28252/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division C1] A coherent cast refractory body is produced by packing the cavity of a mould with a refractory aggregate (minimum particle size = 300 microns), the packed mould cavity being then filled (e.g. through a filling tube 20) with a slip comprising refractory fines (maximum particle size= 150 microns) suspended in a liquid vehicle by introduction of the slip adjacent the bottom of the packed mould cavity. In one embodiment a porous mould is used and additional slip is introduced into the top of the mould cavity as liquid is absorbed by the mould. The slip may comprise 70-90 wt. per cent refractory fines and 10-30 wt. per cent water and may also contain deflocculants (e.g. citric acid or hydrochloric acid, sodium silicate) and temporary binding agents, e.g. dextrine. The aggregate may be Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , SiC or mullite or mixtures thereof and the fines fused mullite, Si, fused SiO2 and mixtures thereof with Al 2 O 3 . In one example aggregate and fines are SiO 2 , and in another silicon carbide is the aggregate and silicon or silicon alloy the fines. In another embodiment a non-porous mould is used and the slip contains a binder which is set in the mould. The binder is a thermosetting resin (e.g. epoxy or phenolic resin) or colloidal silica, the first being set by heating and the second by addition of an acid or an alkali to the slip or freezing.
