Abstract
An aqueous coating composition for corundum furnace linings is made by dispersing nickel and/or chromium oxide in an aqueous dextrin solution. In the example, 2.5 to 10 kg. of powdered oxide are dispersed in 1 litre of a 25% aqueous dextrin solution.ALSO:A refractory slag-resistant furnace lining is formed by pressing against the furnace shell a composition of which the principal constituent is a mineral selected from corundum, mullite and mixtures thereof in the case of a furnace for use with acid slags, or anorthite in the case of a furnace for use with basic slags. At least some of the mullite may be replaced by sillimanite and at least some of the anorthite by sodium anorthite which preferably contains at least 17% CaO. The mineral preferably constitutes 70% of the lining, the balance being a binder such as kaolin and bentonite. Corundum containing linings can be improved by using nickel and/or chromium oxide, either admixed with the corundum lining or coated thereon. In the latter case the coating is made by dispersing the nickel and/or chromium oxide in an aqueous dextrin solution.
